Little Tree Shop was involved in Fairtrade Fortnight last weekend at Citylife Church in Wantirna. A double-table spread showcased Little Tree Shop's finest selection of fair trade products including the new 'organic & fair' towels and recycled sari handbags handmade by women in Kolkata who have left prostitution. The stalls were set up after the two saturday afternoon and sunday morning services.

Fairtrade fortnight runs from May 7-22 and aims to promote awareness of fair trade products and where to find them, empowering people to make consumer choices that are ethical and provide a better future for producers around the world.

Little Tree Shop in Chiang Rai

Little Tree Shop recently financed and ran a development project to empower a Thai NGO, training up hill-tribes women in sewing and textile production.

The project involved 18 women from ethnic minority backgrounds (Akha, Lahu and Mien) in Chiang Rai province being trained in textile production by a Thai vocational educator.

10 of these women were specially selected for participation in an intensive workshop with a high end Australian fashion designer. The women were trained in how to create and produce contemporary designs marketable for the international market. Many of these women had previously worked in labour and construction and blossomed into exotic beauties at a fashion show parading the designs on the final night of the workshop.

Stories of the women’s life struggles and what they have overcome in their lives are inspirational. This project is a demonstration of how fashion and design can bring hope, joy, friendship and love.

In the future, 6 of these women will be hired permanently by the Mirror Foundation, providing these women with a fair wage and dignifying employment. The Little Tree Shop fashion label will be launched officially later this year.

Photos and clips of the fashion parade can be viewed at: http://www.facebook.com/littletreeshop
